A book can become another unfinished task if the evening comes with a required number of pages. For bedtime reading, it may be more useful to choose a stopping point by comfort and interest. You are allowed to close the book in the middle of a chapter.
Set up the place before selecting a reading challenge. A chair beside a lamp might suit you better than balancing a hardback in bed. If you do read under the covers, notice whether you spend the whole time adjusting pillows or holding the book above your face. A lighter edition or an e-reader with comfortable text settings may solve a handling problem.
Aim the light at the page
Try the lamp from your normal reading position. The page should be easy to see without a bulb shining directly into your eyes. If you share the room, check the view from the other side of the bed. A small change in angle can reduce how much light reaches the neighboring pillow.
Keep the switch easy to reach. Turning off the light should not involve moving a drink, reaching behind furniture or crossing a dark room with a book in hand. Put a bookmark nearby so closing the book takes one uncomplicated motion.
Choice of material is personal. A familiar novel, essays or a light nonfiction chapter can all fit. If a particular book repeatedly leaves you wanting to research, shop or argue online, save it for a different part of the day. There is no universal list of books that everyone should find relaxing.
Leave the project at the door
Avoid tracking a reading streak if it makes the evening feel assessed. Notes and highlights are optional. You can enjoy a passage without saving it, and you can abandon a book that has turned into a duty.
For audio, use a timer and a comfortable volume rather than letting a queue run indefinitely. Keep cables and devices out of the bed where they could tangle or become buried. If you are sharing a room, agree on whether the sound is welcome.
When your attention starts slipping, put the book in the same place each night. A simple return spot makes tomorrow's reading easier without requiring a perfectly styled nightstand. The habit should leave you with fewer things to manage at the end of the day.
