A foundation can look convincing beneath a store light and quite different beside a window at home. Knowing that a mismatch is possible is a reason to read the return policy before buying, particularly when the product is expensive or unfamiliar. The word returns on a website is only the starting point.
Find the policy that applies to the seller, item and purchase channel you are using. A brand's own website, its store counter and a third-party marketplace listing may not use identical terms. Check the actual seller name on the order page rather than assuming the platform's logo answers that question.
The first detail to resolve is whether opened cosmetics can be returned. Then look for the time limit and the event that starts it: purchase, shipment or delivery. Keep the receipt, order confirmation and any packaging the policy requires. A generous-sounding number of days is less useful if you discover the conditions only after discarding the box.
Follow the money and the route
A return may lead to a refund, exchange or store credit. Those outcomes are not interchangeable when you are comparing a purchase with another retailer. Check whether return postage, restocking charges or the original delivery fee affect the amount you will receive. If an item was part of a promotion, find out how returning it affects the discount or free gift.
Also check how the return must happen. A nearby physical branch may not accept an online order, or a mailed return may need prior authorization. Make a realistic estimate of the effort involved. A low price can become less appealing if correcting a mismatch means a long trip or expensive postage.
When wording is unclear, ask a specific question in writing: 'Can I return this foundation after opening it to check the shade, and what amount would be refunded?' Save the answer with your order details. Avoid asking only whether the store accepts returns; that may produce a general answer that misses the cosmetic exception.
Test a new purchase within the permitted window without deliberately stretching the policy. Keep notes about the issue, such as the shade being too warm in daylight or the dispenser arriving broken. If you decide to return it, start the process promptly and retain proof of handover or shipment. A clear plan makes trying a new product less uncertain without treating returns as a substitute for thoughtful shopping.
