A lipstick that looked softly rose in the store can seem brown at home. Another shade may look far brighter in daylight than it did in the bathroom. Before deciding that you are bad at choosing colors, check the light around the mirror.

Try the shade with the rest of your face visible. A close-up of lips alone removes the context of your skin, hair and the other colors you wear. Look at the result from conversation distance, then examine the edge and texture more closely if you need to.

A direct comparison is more useful than memory. If you are choosing between two shades, try them on separate occasions under similar lighting and take a short note. Photos can help you remember the overall impression, but cameras change color automatically. Keep your in-person observation as the main reference.

Color is only part of the choice

Sheer and opaque versions of a similar shade can look quite different. Your natural lip color shows through a sheer formula, while an opaque one contributes more of its own color. The finish also matters: shine can make a shade feel more prominent even when the pigment is subtle.

Try a light application before layering. You may like a strong shade in a smaller amount more than a pale shade applied heavily. Use the product only as directed; if it is not intended as a stain or a multipurpose cosmetic, there is no need to invent another use for it.

Consider the setting where you expect to wear it. A color chosen for a daytime desk routine does not have to behave like a statement shade for an evening outfit. You can enjoy both, but it helps to know which question the purchase is answering.

If a shade repeatedly looks wrong in the light where you spend most of your time, write down the specific issue. Too orange, too pale and too shiny are different problems. That note can keep you from buying nearly the same color under a more attractive name.

The mirror does not need to deliver a verdict about which colors you are allowed to wear. It simply gives you a chance to see the lipstick in the surroundings where you will actually enjoy it.
