Two nearly identical tubes can make a makeup drawer surprisingly difficult to manage. One was opened recently; the other has traveled in a bag for months. If you do not remember which is which, the tidy appearance of the drawer does not tell you much about the products inside it.

Record the purchase and opening dates when you start using a cosmetic. A small label on the package, a note in your phone or a simple paper list can all work. Keep the product name and shade with the date so that the record still makes sense when you own more than one version.

The FDA explains that US law generally does not require expiration dates on cosmetics, although products that are also drugs, such as sunscreens, are subject to different requirements. Follow any expiration date, period-after-opening guidance and storage instructions supplied for the actual product. A missing printed date does not mean an item lasts indefinitely.

Track the facts you can know

Your log does not need to estimate a formula's chemistry. Record the dates and directions you have, along with any manufacturer advice you obtained. If a batch code is unclear, contact the manufacturer rather than treating an unofficial decoding website as definitive.

Keep storage and use in mind. A product repeatedly left in unsuitable conditions should not be judged solely by a calendar entry. Changes in appearance, texture or smell can also be reasons to stop using it, but the absence of an obvious change is not proof that every old cosmetic remains suitable.

Do not extend a date because much of the product remains. The money was spent at purchase; keeping an unsuitable item in use does not recover it. Instead, note the size you bought and whether a smaller package might suit your actual use next time.

For a replacement, close out the old entry and start a new one. Avoid transferring the remaining old formula into the new package or mixing products to reduce waste. The new container should retain its own identity and directions.

Review the list when you refill the daily kit, not every time you apply makeup. A simple date record should reduce uncertainty, not become another demanding beauty habit. Its job is to help you make a clear replacement decision when memory alone would be unreliable.
